Go to Run and type "chkdsk /f /r" (without the quotes)

Then reboot. The "Check Disk" can take a long time I'll usually start it before bed or before I leave for work. That'll usually fix that kind of stuff the only other thing would be SpinRite by GRC but you'd have to pay for that. http://grc.com

hard drives just fail after a certain number of years and not with any consistency. you can try a defrag if the pc still recognizes it if it doesn't you are going to half to chalk it up as a loss. if the drive had lots of data that was valuable to you you may want to consider hard drive recovery services. they can be costly but if the data is important they are worth it. You should always back up everything at least once a week

Do you have 3 physical drives or 3 partitions? It may be best to take it to a computer repair shop to have them look at it. If it is a corrupt partition it is more likely that the drive is ok. Many things can cause HD corruption, for instance, old tired drives, power outages, physical damage, etc. If you are lucky it will be a file system problem that is recoverable and not a physical defect. Even so, if the data is recovered I would consider replacing the drive. Firewalls and Anti-Virus programs are not 100% even when totally up-to-date. There is always a possibility of something new sneaking by them.

You fail to mention if it's internal or external, with an internal you can re-boot and see if the drive shows. If not you can shut-down the computer and un-hook the drive, restart the computer and let it fully boot, then shut it off again and hook the drive back up and then boot and see if it shows. If not "SOL" unless you pay a service to recover lost files.

If it is an external, you can remove it from the case and install it as a slave in your computer and see if it shows.

This no reason for a hard drive to fail they just do. (Back-up)
